Meet Maria.
Maria just completed an exciting 3-week internship with one of the most prestigious firms in the world, Ernst & Young (EY LLP).
After finishing her Business Administration diploma from Academy of Learning Career College – Bay & Bloor in Toronto, Maria was the only candidate chosen by EY LLP for the internship. (Way to go, Maria!)
Learning how big businesses work
During her three weeks, Maria saw firsthand how several aspects of EY LLP function on a daily basis.
- She learned how to organize and prepare meetings rooms.
- She helped organize and inspect mail, letters and parcels.
- She saw how EY LLP produces brochures, invitations and catalogs before sending them to the public. (She even did some printing in the print shop, where the company prints roughly 1 million copies each year!)
- She learned about tracking time and expenses of partners and senior managers.
- She saw how the company plans and organizes contract bids using a software called Mercury.
- She learned about records management.
- She received receptionist training and saw how meeting rooms are booked for senior partners and new hires.
- She also learned about calendar management and travel and event planning.
“There is not enough space here to describe all the interesting things I learned in my three weeks at EY. I am grateful to Cindy Macaulay, Supervising Associate of AWS-Administration and Workplace Services, and Samantha Henderson, my EA Buddy at EY, for giving me this fantastic experience.”
The skills that prepared her for the job
Gained through the Business Administration program at Academy of Learning Career College, Maria says these key skills helped her be ready for the position: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, computer literacy, and navigating search engines.
To AOLCC grads who might want to apply for an EY LLP internship in the future, Maria has this advice:
“My advice to all AOLCC grads is: Don’t be afraid to apply at EY LLP as an intern student!
EY LLP gives you the best opportunity in your career. They train you and they always emphasize teamwork, so you’re not alone in your job. Do your research before your interview and ask questions. Do your best and make sure to dress up in business attire for your interview and believe in yourself.”
