Course Introduction
Introduction to Medical Transcription provides students with an understanding of medical documents and how to create them. Students learn the fundamental concepts of all aspects of medical transcription, how to create accurate documents, the importance of confidentiality with regard to medical reports, the rules of proofreading and editing, and how to transcribe medical reports using the correct capitalization, numbers, punctuation, abbreviations, symbols, and metric measurement rules. Students also expand their knowledge of proper grammar and punctuation through proofreading exercises. This course consists of 15 days (75 hours) of daily, participative learning sessions.
Course Prerequisites
Completion of Medical Office Procedures, Medical Terminology, Word Level 1, and Keyboarding Level 1.
Course Notes
Students are supplied with textbooks for ongoing reference. In addition to quizzes, tests, and assignments, there is a final exam upon completion of the course. Students must achieve a mark of 75% overall and on the final exam to successfully complete the course.

Punctuation: Identifying and correctly using various types of punctuation such as the comma, semi-colon, hyphen, period, and decimal point.
Word Formatting: Identifying and correctly using various types of word formatting such as capitalization, abbreviations, numbers, and symbols.
Grammar: Identifying and correctly using proper grammar, focusing on various parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and pronouns, correctly defining word-choice pairs, and creating proper sentence structure.
Transcribing Correspondence and Medical Reports: Accurately formatting and transcribing various types of medical reports including consultation reports, operative reports, and history and physical examination reports, as well as preparing a variety of medical letters and doctors’ notes.

Course aim: Students will gain comprehensive knowledge in the fundamental document creation aspects of the Medical Office Assistant (MOA) industry.
Method of delivery: Students are enrolled at the campus with a scheduled start date and are supported by a stand-up instructor.
