Educational Assistant Diploma

This diploma program is designed to prepare students for working in the education field. Its objective is to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue employment as an Educational Assistant. During the duration of the program, participants will be acquainted with the various disciplines theories and best practices related to child development, children learning processes and teaching techniques, classroom management and student supervision. The program also covers the different roles the Educational Assistant plays in both the special education and early childhood.

Admissions Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent or mature student status and a passing grade on the admissions test.

Personal Support Worker Certificate

This program is designed to standardise training and provide a solid educational base for workers who provide long-term care and support services to individuals in both institutional and community settings.

Admissions Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent or Mature Student Status
  • Passing score on the literacy test
  • Fluency in English (oral and written)
  • Fitness to complete the practical components of the program
  • Up-to-date immunization (seasonal flu and Hepatitis A and B immunizations are recommended) and free of communicable diseases
  • Clear Criminal Record Check or a full pardon Police checks must include “Vulnerable Position Screening.”

Objectives

  • Co-operating with all members of the health team
  • Promoting safety and working in a safe manner
  • Practicing universal precautions and maintaining a clean working environment
  • Assisting with ambulating, mobilization, and proper positioning and maintaining body alignment as required
  • Assisting with mechanical and physical lifts and/or transfers
  • Changing bed linens and towels and performing laundry-related tasks
  • Assisting with personal hygiene (e.g., bathing, dressing, toileting, etc.
  • Assisting with meal preparation, grocery shopping, feeding, dietary planning, and food handling and reporting fluid intake and output
  • Taking and recording blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, body weight, and height
  • Collecting various specimens for required medical tests
  • Assisting with range of motion exercises and other rehabilitative measures
  • Providing emotional and social support services to care-receivers and their families
  • Works as a supportive care worker for palliative care and hospice patients.
  • Observing and reporting clinical and treatment findings, behavioural changes, and changes in ongoing conditions
  • Maintaining records and documenting procedures.

Career Opportunties

Training in the Personal Support Worker program provides the opportunity for students to develop basic nursing and social service training skills necessary for employment in homes and apartments in the community, long-term facilities, congregate housing settings, and/or day programs.
